Sophie Walbeoffe’s paintings are shaped by a life lived in motion — travelling, observing, and responding to landscapes, animals, and people in places few are able to experience. Colour and light are her constant guides, and her work carries the truth of lived experience and the immediacy of feeling.
Trained at Wimbledon School of Art and later with Cecil Collins at the Central School of Art, Walbeoffe combines deep knowledge of painting and art history with the freedom of experiment. She has painted in extraordinary and challenging settings, from the camel wells of northern Kenya to the divided streets of Jerusalem.
Her vision is also indebted to the luminous influence of Winifred Nicholson, whose understanding of colour as light has become a touchstone in Walbeoffe’s own practice. Like Nicholson, she seeks the radiance of everyday life, finding gateways of light in both intimate and expansive subjects.
